Communication and Conflict
Every couple argues. The research question is never whether conflict happens, it is what the conflict does: whether partners leave an argument closer or further apart, whether the same fight repeats for years, and how repair actually works when it works. This topic follows studies of everyday couple communication, from negotiation over housework to the management of uncertainty.
It also looks at communication beyond couples: how friends negotiate, how families talk across difference, and why some conversations build trust while others quietly spend it.
Questions this topic explores
- What separates a productive argument from a damaging one?
- How do couples negotiate fairness in daily life?
- Why does uncertainty about a relationship change how partners talk?
- What does repair look like after a serious fight?
